AIDS is the leading cause of death among adolescents in Africa and the second highest contributor of death among adolescents globally according to the World Health Organization (WHO, 2014). Even though AIDS-related deaths are reducing for some populations, this is not the case among adolescents.
NOPE is one of the leading civil society organizations in Kenya and the East Africa region that have prioritized young people, particularly adolescents, as a key target population for health programming. Through our flagship Ambassadors of Change program, we promote positive behaviors and mentor and support young leaders to identify and build on their talents. NOPE provides them with opportunities to sharpen their communication and leadership skills, minimize the risks of HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted infections and to influence others using youth-friendly and peer-centered approaches. Other key topics that NOPE’s youth program addresses include adolescent sexual reproductive health (ASRH), alcohol and drug abuse, self-image, career choices, livelihoods and public speaking.
